THE WINE
The fresh perfumed aromatics are of bright purple and red fruits, layered with ripe wooded spices. A concentrated palate of red currant and wild raspberry are enhanced by a firm yet soft tannin structure. Freshly made stovetop caramel underpins the fruit, while flowing over the full palate length, elegant and without peaks, bright acidity completes the wine. A lovely balanced and medium weighted wine, full of flavour.
THE VINTAGE
One of the best, close to perfect vintages in the last 10 years. January was warm with good rainfall setting up the vines with an ideal amount of soil moisture. This was followed by a month of cool and dry conditions, perfect for slow and steady fruit ripening. The cooler conditions and even ripening resulted in producing fine elegant wines.
VITICULTURE + WINEMAKING
Selected from our S5 and 470 clones planted on the warm, north facing ‘F’ block, the wine was produced separately in small batches. The fruits were fermented in open pots, of which one had a ‘sandwich’ layer of whole bunches, starting with a cold soak, and hand plunging, before being pressed at dryness. Batched separately and matured in large format French oak for 8 months.
