Rouleur Chardonnay 2020

Categories: ,

What a vintage, what a year 2020 was?! Challenging but rewarding is one way to look at it.

Certainly the reward for us was receiving fine parcels of fruit from growers who bore the brunt of an irregular season, where low yields were standard and disease risk was high.

Our 2020 Chardonnay is a single vineyard wine, with fruit sourced exclusively from a 3 acre block of clone P58 on the Primavera property in Woori Yallock.

Waiting until the 2nd week of March, then all fruit was handpicked in the early morning and sorted before processing.

After a night in the fridge, we whole bunch pressed our fruit with half the juice being run, full solids to our finest new (16%) second and third fill Puncheons. Remaining juice was pressed to stainless steel tank, where the juice was chilled and settled for 48 hours before being transferred to aged (neutral) puncheons for fermentation.

All barrels were fermented cooly and evenly (25 degrees C tops) using wild yeast, and none of our barrels underwent MLF. We opted to stir some quality lees in select barrels over the winter months and some wine remained unsulfured until early summer, ensuring our Chardonnay had just a hint of ‘funk’ supporting a mostly bright, pure and linear wine.

After 8 months maturation, all barrels were racked to tank and settled for one month before bottling without fining or filtration.

Our 2020 Chardonnay opens with hints of lime splice, tightly wound stone fruit, flinty sulfide and delicious mealy oak.

There’s pithy grapefruit, apple and nectarine on the palate guided by chalky, mineral acidity. Subtle oak adds weight and texture to a wine that’s slowly but surely building in complexity. Don’t be afraid to tuck this in the cellar for a year or three – or serve now with just a chill.
